Custodial Parent Income Tax Question

Custodial Parent Income Tax Question

My wife and I separated in 2006-2007, and I was deemed the non-custodial parent, living in a separate house.

I sold that house in 2009, reconciled with my wife and we lived together in our old house until she left in October with our 8-year-old son.

We filed married-but-filing separately. My income is 58% of the family income. I claimed my son as my dependent for the 2010 tax year. Was I right?

To claim the Earned Income Credit (EIC) for the children under your guardianship, you need to follow these steps:

Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for claiming the EIC.
Obtain Social Security Numbers for each child.
File your federal income tax return using either Form 1040 or 1040A.
Complete the EIC worksheet or use the IRS EIC Assistant tool to determine the credit amount.
Provide the necessary information about the children, including their relationship to you, residency, and other relevant details.
