Travel Income Tax Deductions

I am a permanent resident of Arizona but had to go into New Mexico to find work.

I am trying to find something back in AZ again.

Can I deduct the hotel, meals and mileage that I've incurred since I have been in New Mexico?

Thank you for your question about whether or not the taxes that you pay for an airline ticket are tax deductible.

If the airline ticket was for business travel, then the ticket and taxes are both included together as a travel deduction.

Mileage Income Tax Deduction Answer
by: Stephanie

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your question. The mileage for your drive into and returning from the office is considered commuting mileage and is not deductible, however any mileage you incur on the job after you arrive is deductible.

Typically, you can deduct the entire cost of your airline ticket as a travel expense income tax deduction.

Yes, typically the fees included on the tax for airline tickets, car rentals and phone bills would be included in your un-reimbursed employee deductions on your Schedule A itemized deductions.

I'm following up on a question someone else asked you about deducting the TAXES on an airline ticket. You said one can deduct the whole thing, but that assumes that the trip is a business expense. I would like to know if you can deduct airline taxes on pleasure trips--also lodging taxes when not business related. Thank you.

Thank you for your follow up question regarding whether or not you can deduct airline taxes on pleasure trips.

Unfortunately, you can't take any personal airline expenses including airline taxes as an income deduction on your tax return. The same is true for lodging taxes.

You can only take business related travel income tax deductions on your tax return which would reduce any business related income that the travel pertained to.

If you've purchased airline tickets and the airline goes bankrupt and the tickets become worthless and no airline will honor, can you deduct the loss of tickets on your taxes?

This is not business related.

Motor Home Interest Income Tax Deduction

by Barry
(Crossville, TN)

Motor Home Income Tax Deduction

Motor Home Income Tax Deduction

We own a home and a motor home (second home) and have been declaring the loan interest on both in the past.

We have now decided to turn the motor home over to a Rental Agency and will share the rental income with the agency and we are responsible for the maintenance, etc.

It is my understanding that since we have no input to the business, we will only have to show the income minus expense on our Form 1040 and cannot show a loss; however, the loss can be carried over to the future years.

We will be using a 5-yr straight-line depreciation model to declare that expense.

My question is: Are we still able to deduct the loan interest paid on the motor home loan or do we loose that deduction when we turned the motor home over to the rental agency.

At that point, we still own it, we're still paying the loan monthly, but it is no longer our second home.

Although, we will be staying in it for a couple of weeks this winter.

Thanks for your help.

Car Income Tax Deduction

by William
(Austin, TX, USA)

Car Income Tax Deduction

Car Income Tax Deduction

I began a new career as an insurance appraiser last year. As a result, my self employment income was less than $40 with 2 listed dependents plus myself as a head of household.

My question is this. Do I have to take the car deduction for the 38,000 miles I drove for business? I qualify for the EIC, so if I don't use the deduction, my refund goes up by $3-4k.

My worry is, the IRS will see my car deduction on previous years, and require me to take it in 2010, which would mean I would owe $3k+ with penalties back.

The other easier question, is since my 2000 Mazda Protege is only worth about $2000, is it proper to receive a $10 or $12k deduction?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,
William

Mileage Deduction Requirement
by: Anonymous

I believe that the IRS only specifically states that you are required to report all income, not exenses. In fact, with regards to the mileage deduction, they will not allow a deduction if adequate logs were not kept. Therefore, I feel it would be safe to say you do not have to report the mileage you drove throughout the year.

Standard vs Actual Mileage Tax Deduction
by: Stephanie

As an independent contractor who is a driver, you can take either the standard mileage deduction or use the actual expense method.

In both situations, you will first need to know how many miles you drive the car for business in a year vs how many miles are driven for personal.

This will give you the business percentage of use. You will then compare how much of a tax deduction you would get if you were to multiply the current year mileage allowance by the number of business miles, vs if you were to multiply the business percentage by the total actual expenses and you can take whichever is bigger.

This is for first year only. Once you take the actual expense method, you cannot change back to the standard mileage deduction. So you need to plan ahead as well.
