Income Tax Deduction of Lap-Band Surgery

Surgery Income Tax Deduction

Surgery Income Tax Deduction

Is lap-band surgery deductible as a itemized medical deduction allowed? Full cost of surgery was paid by myself including cost of air fair to get to place of surgery.

Payment was made by wire transfer to an account in California and surgery was performed just over the border in Mexico.. does that matter?

I am obese, have heart problems, and diabetic and it was to help myself since my insurance would not help me with any of the cost.

Sugery Tax Deductible

Your Lap-Band surgery even though it was done in Mexico should be tax deductible once your expenses reach 7.5% of your income. Just be sure to have all your receipts.

Deductible Dental Expenses
by: Stephanie

Dental payments are deductible as a Schedule A itemized deduction on your personal income tax return subject to a 7.5% limitation based on income.

What this means is that you can add all your dental payments along with health insurance and copayments together and deduct any amount that totals over 7.5% of your income.

Example:

Income = 20,000.00
20,000 x .075 = 1500.00
Total health payments = 2000.00
You can deduct 500.00 (2000 - 1500) in health deductions on your tax return.

Income Tax Deduction for Home Health Care
by: Stephanie

Thank you for your question about whether or not you can deduct health care expenses for an elderly parent.

Typically, you are able to deduct the amount of in home medical care expenses you spend for your dependent parent on your tax return as an itemized deduction.

You would only be able to deduct the amount this above the normal 7.5% to 10% of your adjusted gross income.

It also should be considered a medical requirement and the recipient should receive a 1099 from you for the amount paid.
