1098 Form Income Tax Question

1098 Form Income Tax Question

1098 Form Income Tax Question

In previous years my son's 1098 form was sent to me (parent) and I included it in my 1040 income tax filing.

This year the university in which he attended sent the 1098 form to him.

Do I include this 1098 form on his 1040EZ form, or can I use it on me for my income tax filing?

I paid for his tuition all 4 years of college.

Education Benefits for Parents
by: BB

If you paid for your son's tuition, you could still claim the education-related tax benefits on your own tax return. Since you financially supported him, you may be eligible for tax credits or deductions associated with education expenses. You can include the information from the 1098 form in your tax filing.

I am unemployed going to school full time. I am also a full-time student. This coming up tax time will be my first year to file 1098 t. Do I claim my son on that as well to get the refund for him?

The 1098T Form
by: BB

As a full-time student, you may be eligible to claim education-related tax benefits such as the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit. If you financially support your son and meet the criteria for claiming him as a dependent, you can include his information on your tax return to potentially qualify for additional tax benefits. Be sure to review the IRS guidelines and consult with a tax professional for personalized advice.

1098T Amount In Box 4

by Pattie
(Florida)

Our daughter was claimed as a dependent on our 2009 taxes and we entered the information provided on the 1098t to file our 2009 taxes which was box 2 4203.40 and box 5 2264.00 so we subtracted box 5(scholarships or grants) from box 2(amounts billed for qualified tuition) and entered the difference which was 1939.00 which gave us American opportunity credit of 776.00.Now this year we can not claim my daughter as a dependent as she is only going to school part-time and her 1098t shows only an amount in box 4 (adjustments made for prior year) of 803.52. 1st- what do we need to do with this amount and where do we enter it? 2nd-does it need to be entered on our tax return or her tax return since she will not be considered our dependent this year? Thanks

Hud-1 Private Sale and 1098 Question

I bought a home through HUD-1 private sale and make my payments to a Mortgage company that makes the payment to original mortgage holder but the 1098 comes in the original name of buyer. Since she is not financing the loan do I put her name down in the 1098 information or the lender's name?

In Regards To 1098 T

by Christopher
(Crockett)

In regards to 1098 T, where it ask "amount actually payed" will this effect if I get the tax credit or not?

I asked my school if they could give me the amount I actually payed towards my tuition so far, and they told me I did not need it, that I could only claim the amount once, and so I should claim full amount billed.

Now I am just confused about it.

My wife has also got a 1098 T, but she has not payed anything yet, does that mean she can not claim the amount billed and get the tax credit?

I don't understand it
